Softball fails to come back against Woburn

by Jacob Schwartz

Strong pitching by Woburn senior Angela Pappalardo shut down softball Friday, 6-1, at Albemarle Field. Woburn defeated the Tigers, 1-1, who were unable to match the Tanner’s clutch hitting.

Woburn took off early, scoring two in the third and two in the fourth.

“Woburn had timely hitting and strong base-running,” said coach Lauren Baugher.

A Tiger rally seemed plausible in the bottom of the fourth when junior Bridget McLaughlin’s single drove in junior Madison Beatrice. Beatrice got on base by slamming a triple to left field on the first pitch of the half inning. However, the Tigers left two runners on base at the end of the inning and continued to leave runners on base throughout the rest of the game.

“We couldn’t move baserunners over as much as we wanted to,” Baugher said.

Woburn was in control offensively, according to senior Claire Doolin, the pitcher. “I really had to hit all my spots, and they took advantages of all my mistakes,” she said.

The Tanners had ten hits Friday.

However, the team fielded well. For example, later on in the game, McLaughlin made an impressive over-the-shoulder catch on a pop-up that could have easily dropped into the shallow outfield.
