Thursday, the science team won the Massachusetts Envirothon competition at the Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park.
This school’s team faced 33 other teams from across the State. According to junior Malini Gandhi, the Envirothon captain, this school’s team’s final score was 320.09 out of a possible 400, only three points above Lexington, the team’s rival.
This school sent two teams to the competition. The team that came in first place was comprised of Gandhi, junior Helen Maunsell, sophomores Ying Gao and Eliana Gevelber and freshman Kavish Gandhi.
The other team placed tenth, and it included seniors Cole Kerr and Emma Rosenfield, junior Natsuko Yamagata and sophomores Gina Ferolito and Mikaela Scheff.
Gandhi said that the teams participated in four written tests, each which focused on a different Eco-Station, or environmental issue. The Eco-Stations were forestry, soils, water and wildlife. According to Gandhi, the winning team placed first in the water activities, second in soil and third in both forestry and wildlife.
In addition to the Eco-Stations, each team had to research and prepare an in-depth presentation about an assigned environmental topic. This year, Gandhi said the topic was stormwater pollution.
Upon hearing the news of the team’s win, Gevelber said she “felt amazing.” She continued, “It was a great feeling to know that all our team’s countless hours of studying, researching and practicing ultimately lead us to victory.”
Next up, the team will head to Pennsylvania for the national competition in July.
