Volleyball beats Wellesley, prepares for postseason

by David Kwartler

Strong performances at home Tuesday led girls’ volleyball to a 3-0 win over Wellesley, bringing its record to 12-1.

According to senior Keane Brazda, a captain with seniors Caileigh Byrne, Deanna Cortina and Anya Carr Klein, although the team was “really good,” the Tigers “beat them easily” in the 3-0 win. “We played really well as a team and kept our focus throughout the entire match,” said Brazda.

The Tigers started off their season with a winning streak and continued with a record that they boast as one of the best in the league. “We have powerful hitters, servers and passers, which are excellent strengths,” she said.
The team has “experienced, motivated players with very good team chemistry on the court,” said Brazda. The team’s success has been attributed to experienced upperclassmen dedicated to winning the State Championships.

To prepare for the postseason, the Tigers are “playing the State’s top teams, such as Lincoln, Sudbury, Barnstable and Melrose,” according to Brazda. The team is also participating in the Medway Classic Tournament.

According to Byrne, “We work on little things rather than big things, such as who we’re playing next and what situations or plays will work best. We’re focusing on the present rather than the future and just preparing for our next opponent.”

Brazda said, “Our team is working on spreading out our offense, so our opponents do not know what to expect from us. We are also working on keeping our focus during matches.”

“The varsity team has always had a great record. Everyone else and I believe we are going to make the State Finals,” said Byrne. “There’s just a different vibe between this team and other teams.”
