Boys' swimming loses to Brookline in close meet

by Adam Rabinowitz
Boys’ swimming and diving, 5-1, lost 93-91 to Brookline at home Thursday, Jan. 11 in a very close meet in which either team could have won, according to coach Ryan Rich.
Rich said the 200-free relay was what kept the Tigers from beating Brookline. “We swam well but weren’t able to win the 200-free, which really set us back,” he said. “Going forward, we’ll continue to work on building our endurance.”
Senior Felix Xu, a captain with seniors Cody Chan and Ryan Campbell, said that the team was not expecting to lose to Brookline in the 200-freestyle. “Previously, they didn’t have such a great 200-free group, so we didn’t put our best swimmers into that race,” said Xu. “They ended up replacing some of their swimmers though, and we lost.”
Rich also said that a few swimmers swam very well. For instance, senior Felix Xu made Sectionals in the 50-freestyle, and freshman Bowen He made States in the 100-breaststroke.
According to Rich, this year’s newcomers have made a big impact so far this season. “We have had great contributions from all of our new swimmers, and they’ve been a big help in improving our record,” he said.
The team’s next meet is this Friday at Wellesley. Xu does not expect it to be a hard matchup.
Wellesley is a strong team in our division, and this meet is important, but I have confidence that we can win,” said Xu.
