Boys’ indoor track, 5-0, finished undefeated in the Bay State League for the 21st straight year, before coming in second at the MIAA Division 1 Sectionals and winning the State title. “Everyone performed well this season,” said senior Andrew Mah, a captain with senior Devin Coughlin and junior Theo Burba.
“I think there was a bit of a target on our backs at the beginning of the season, but everyone just performed phenomenally,” said Mah.
At the All-State meet, Burba placed second in the 600-meter event. Mah finished second in the two-mile event with sophomore Ian Horsburgh close behind in fifth.
In the relays, the 4×400 meter team made up of Burba, Coughlin, junior Forrest Kaplan, and sophomore Raghav Kadambi took first place. The 4×400 meter team qualified for Nationals and placed 14th.
Several weeks ago at Nationals in New York, Mah placed fifth in the Championship 5000 meter and 15th in the Championship two mile. Horsburg competed in the Emerging Elite division of the two-mile and placed 17th.
Due to an illness, head coach Jim Blackburn was forced to take a leave absence for the season. “Bringing home that state trophy for him was a good feeling, and we hope he can come back soon,” said Mah.
Math teacher Shawn Wallace took over the position of head coach, and “did a great job stepping up,” according to Mah. He added that “Wallace took on a workload of two people, but he was able to produce results.”
The team hopes to continue their success into the outdoor season this spring when they attempt to defend their State title for the third straight year.
