Serving bowls of steaming soup at a homeless shelter is not the only way teens can better the community.

As sophomore Jenny Cronin, the founder of the club fashion for a cause, has shown, there are many ways to serve others.

Cronin and sophomore Paroma Mallick, an officer, said the club will put on a benefit fashion show Friday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. Additionally, all of the club’s earnings from this school year will be donated to UNICEF.

Cronin emphasized that the club intends to help students and the community see that “you do not have to be directly volunteering” in order to contribute to a charity organization to help out aspects of society that are suffering.

In addition, fashion for a cause aims to entertain people, according to Cronin.

The officers intend to use their “talents and interests to do good in the world and create a fun new experience for students at Newton North,” Mallick said.

In order for both the club and the show to be successful, the club meets on a weekly basis to discuss fundraising and design ideas.

“We’re making half the clothes ourselves, so sometimes when we meet, we sew together,” Mallick claimed.

Bloomingdales has agreed to sponsor the fashion show and is providing the other half of the clothes that will be in the show.

According to Mallick, it has been decided that the show will be held on June 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

Cronin was not expecting to put on an event at all this school year, but with Bloomingdales help and everyone’s dedication, “it seems as if we will be able to achieve this.”

“You do not have to know how to sew. If you have an eye for fashion, that is enough. I personally am not a very strong seamstress, but I give my input on what fabrics and cuts we should make,” Cronin added.

Students interested in helping out during the night of the show this year ought to drop by room 428 Mondays X-block. There are also occasional meetings in the dance studio for models “so that they can practice walking,” Cronin said.

In order to raise funds for additional materials for the show, “we have and will continue to put on a lot of bake sales,” Cronin noted.

According to Cronin, “We started this year, and in the beginning I thought of the club as just a place to talk about fashion.” Now, however, she claims that the club has “turned into something greater.”

The club officers are excited to have been enabled to be putting on the show and donating proceeds to UNICEF, Mallick noted.

“Next year, and for each successive year after that, however, we are going to pick a new charity to donate to,” she said.

Mallick, who designs the posters for the club’s advertisement campaign said, “We will also be selling t-shirts to raise money for the show and for UNICEF.”

In addition to the bake sales and t-shirt sales, the club members bond through meetings and conversations pertaining to different eras of fashion that they each find appealing.

All of the members and officers have their inputs and ideas heard. As the head of the club, Cronin said she receives the help of science teacher Shu-Yee Chen while she works closely with sophomores Katie Bubelo, Jason Lob, Mallick, and Paulina Rosenberg to decide how the club should be run.

As the club continues into next year, the officers will be planning to put on a fall fashion show next year and “perhaps even a prom fashion show my senior year which is in two years,” she claimed.
