Strong performances lead boys' cross country to first victory

by Jacob Schwartz
Boys’ cross country, 1-0, swept its first race of the season Wednesday with Tiger runners taking the top three positions, outscoring Milton and Natick, 17-43 and 17-47 respectively.
“Although it wasn’t a competitive race, we all ran as hard as we could,” said senior David Demarest, a captain with senior Jonny Long. “There were a lot of personal records and great performances. It was a fun day.”
According to Demarest, junior Gabe Montague, who has consistently shined in all three running seasons, captured first place in the five kilometer race with 16:34. In second place was junior Mike Schlicting, clocking in at 16:53, and Long placed third 30 seconds later.
“I think that in general, people were really stoked for the first race,” Demarest said. “While the times they get are rarely the fastest of the season, I think the race is overall the most fun.”
The rest of the season may not just be fun and games for the team, who have some challenging goals to accomplish. According to Demarest, the team’s two main goals this season are to defeat Brookline and stay undefeated for the remainder of the season. “We haven’t beaten Brookline since 2004, so that is definitely important to us,” he said.
