Softball outhits Needham on Senior Day

by Jacob Schwartz
With excellent pitching by senior Clare Doolin and freshman Liv Sloane, the Tigers, 17-3, beat Needham at home on Senior Day, Wednesday, 8-1.
Senior Lydia O’Connor led off for the Tigers with a bunt single that rolled between the mound and first base, which got the ball rolling. After senior Katie Caruso reached first on a walk, junior Zoe Cassidy slammed a line drive up the middle, scoring two RBIs.
Cassidy has also been a big help for the Tigers hitting-wise, coach Lauren Baugher said. With her clutch hitting, Cassidy has made opposing pitchers regret intentional walking Caruso, who bats before her.
To begin the second, O’Connor made another impressive bunt single, which this time straddled the left foul line. “She’s been a great leadoff hitter for us. She went 3-3, and is one of the league leaders in hits,” Baugher said.
Senior Clare Doolin, the starter, pitched well, bringing the heat throughout the first four innings.
To close out Needham, freshman Liv Sloane came in for Doolin in the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Sloane managed to get out of a jam. With two outs and the bases loaded, Sloane caught a Needham batter looking at a third strike.
Baugher also commended sophomore Shannon Riley for her catching yesterday and throughout the season. “She is a tough, determined kid, and she did a good job communicating from behind the plate, and being a leader.”
