Science team begins season

by Peter Diamond
In the past two months, the science team has competed in two Western Science Suburban League (WSSL) events, monthly competitions for high school science teams in the area.
Between the two events so far, which were Thursday, Nov. 10 and October 13, this school’s team is currently placed fifth for WSSL teams, according to junior Jacob Fauman, who leads the WSSL team.

“I feel we’re doing well and that the people who participate in WSSL are all really intelligent, capable and motivated to do well,” Fauman said. “Nevertheless, I feel that we can push for better than fifth place in the upcoming events and hopefully finish in the top three.”

The science team competes in many science-based competitions throughout the year, including the Science Olympiad, which will take place in March.

One major change for this year’s team is a shift in the role of adviser. Science teacher Barbara Gibson stepped down from the position of coach this year, and her duties have been shared by several members of the science department.

Science department head Amy Winston is the team’s new head adviser. “I primarily help with logistics, permission slips, budget and fundraising, although each competition has a separate faculty adviser,” she said.

For example, science teacher Jo-Anne Purdy is the adviser for the upcoming Women of Science competition Saturday, Dec. 3, and science teacher Kevin Brosnan is helping the Women of Science teams with their mouse-trap powered boats for the competition.
