This school will host a NewtonSERVES Day event Saturday.

NewtonSERVES Day, a City-wide day of community service, will take place at over 60 non-profit organizations and City of Newton departments around Newton Sunday, according to the NewtonSERVES informational pamphlet.
This school is one of the participating sites. It will host volunteers to spruce up classrooms and the future student union with paint and possibly other decorations, according to English teacher and librarian Kevin McGrath.
People of all ages can participate throughout the day. The session for the morning projects lasts from 9:15 to 12, and the afternoon session is from 12:30 to 3:30. McGrath said that this school’s project will only be available to volunteers during the afternoon session.
Projects at other locations will include cleaning up parks, planting gardens and helping senior citizens, according to the NewtonSERVES Day pamphlet.
The day does not just include volunteering. It will begin at 8:30 with breakfast and registration at Newton City Hall. Then, Mayor Setti Warren will conduct an opening ceremony at which volunteers will receive t-shirts and snacks. In between the morning and afternoon sessions, volunteers can return to City Hall to regroup with others or register for the day if they are just arriving for the afternoon session. The day will close with ice cream at City Hall, sponsored by Cabot’s Ice Cream.
Volunteers must register through City Hall, and can sign up as an individual or as a team. This day will take place rain or shine, according to the pamphlet. Volunteers can sign up at newtoncommunitypride.org.
