Directed by Spanish teacher Daniel Fabrizio, “Rumors,” a farce by Neil Simon, goes up Thursday, Nov. 1 through Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
“Rumors” tells the comical story of four affluent couples who arrive at a party and find that the host, the deputy mayor of New York City, has a gunshot in his ear and that the hostess is mysteriously missing.
“At its core, ‘Rumors’ examines the not-so-glamorous side of high society, namely how the well-to-do members of a tennis club are so apt to gossip and how the spreading of these rumors can ruin reputations,” said Fabrizio.
Fabrizio explained that the play features aspects of farcical comedy, such as door slamming, slapstick and mistaken identity.
“Neil Simon’s presentation of four upper-class couples whose marriages are in varying states of dysfunction can get a bit exaggerated and outrageous, and yet it reminds us how other people’s perceptions of us can inform how we function in our daily lives,” he said.
Sophomore Elizabeth Reilly’s scenic design enhances the production, according to Fabrizio.
“The set is a intricate, two-story behemoth,” said Fabrizio. “It’s so nice I’ve considered moving in.”
Having directed at Theatre Ink before, Fabrizio is enjoying directing “Rumors.”
“As always, the students here never cease to amaze me with the energy and enthusiasm they bring to a creative process. I can’t help but marvel at the inner-workings of Theater Ink, which puts such an emphasis on the learning aspect of theatre.”
Senior Anna Nemetz stars as Chris, a party guest, and has enjoyed the experience, she said. “The audience can expect death by laughter,” said Nemetz. “The show is so fun and hilarious that there is never a dull moment.”
Tickets are $7 and sold at all lunches and at theatreink.net.
