Model United Nations participates in international conference

by Amanda Hills
Last weekend, students in the Model United Nations club attended the Harvard National Model United Nations conference along with 3,000 other students from around the world, according to history teacher and Model U.N. adviser Gregory Drake.
This school’s club sent 21 delegates who represented Pakistan and Belgium, according to Drake. He said that students were grouped into 13 committees and explored a “wide array of topics,” including child soldiers, the rights of refugees and the world’s population in 2100. Political, cultural, social and humanitarian issues were all discussed.
In addition to the club’s regular Thursday night meetings, delegates spent time “familiarizing themselves with their country and its position on the topics of their committee,” said Drake.
More than half of the delegates were freshmen and sophomores who had never before attended a conference. “I think that many of them came away with a better understanding of how Model U.N. works.”
He added, “I feel great about the future of the club with so much energy among the underclassmen.”
According to Drake, the club is considering hosting a conference at this school in the spring for local schools.
