Juniors Jordan Ecker and Jonathan Kim experienced their first win since joining the debate team at the meet at South Saturday, Jan. 7, according to Ecker.
“It felt like all the hard work I’d invested into the team was finally paying off,” said Ecker, a captain with senior Abby Holtzman. “We were really struck speechless, and life didn’t feel real for the rest of the weekend.”
Kim added, “It felt very good to win the tournament. We had gotten close to winning many times before, but had never actually won.”
The team also took part in a national competition at Columbia University this past weekend, according to Ecker. He and Kim lost in the quarter finals.
Ecker said that even with the team’s recent successes, it is still looking to improve its performance. “Right now we’re all breaking even or getting winning records, but we really want to see everyone get to the winning record point and make the semi-finals,” he added.
So far this season, the team has participated in meets against Dighton Rehoboth, Lexington, and Lincoln-Sudbury. Junior Zach Rosenof and sophomore Tristan Rus went 4-0 at Lincoln Sudbury, which was “a happy surprise and another nice point,” said Ecker.
The team competed in a meet at Revere on Saturday against teams from across the state.
