This school and South’s Ligerbots team recently competed at the Boston FIRST Robotics competition Thursday, March 22 to Saturday, March 24.
The team was successful, coming in 10 out of 53 teams at Boston FIRST, according to junior Eli Sadovnik, an officer along with juniors Paige Grody and Evan Nitkin, South senior Ruth Allard and South junior Leanora McVittie.
Some of the local participating teams at both meets included Boston University Academy, Beaver Country Day, Wayland and Boston Latin.
Sadovnik said that each team was instructed to build a robot to play Rebound Rumble, a game similar to basketball but involving only robots.
The game is comprised of four hoops placed at both ends of the court, each of which hangs at a different height. Three bridges mark the middle of the 27 by 54-foot court. The goal of the game is for the robots to make it over the bridge and shoot as many foam basketballs into the hoops as possible.
Sadovnik said that the team started building its robot in early January and finished around the time of February vacation. In total, he said the team spent six weeks building the robot.
He said he was “very pleased with the outcomes of the competitions. We had a solid robot, which played Rebound Rumble very well.”
The team has no more official competitions this season. However, Sadovnik said there will be an informal competition called Beantown Blitz at Northeastern University Saturday, June 2, which Sadovnik said will just be for fun.
Earlier this year, the Ligerbots competed in the Worcester Polytechnical Institute Regional FIRST Robotics competition.
