Girls' volleyball hopes for successful season

by David Kwartler

Girls’ volleyball, 8-1, started off strongly after its 3-0 home win against Needham Thursday.

“During the match, we became more aggressive when we were losing, so we picked ourselves up and came back and won,” said senior Caileigh Byrne, a captain with seniors Keane Brazda, Deanna Cortina and Anya Carr Klein.

The Tigers began the season with a long winning streak of seven games, pointing the team in the right direction towards a successful season, according to Klein.

“We have experienced players who have played together, with strong servers and attackers. A lot of teams lack those,” said Brazda. “We are all very competitive and strive to get better every day.”

Despite their early victories, the Tigers are still trying to improve to prepare for the postseason.

According to Byrne, the team still needs “to stay focused during big games like Brookline and pick each other up and stay positive when we’re down a few points and losing.

“We work on the little things during practice. Once we know who we’re playing next, we get familiar with what their defense looks like, and we try to find the best way to run strong offense,” said Byrne.

According to Brazda, “We need to focus on the simple aspects of the game and avoid holding back instead of playing our best.

The team’s next match is against Dedham Wednesday. Coach Richard Barton’s philosophy is to not change general strategies that are working, and to make most adjustments during the game. According to Brazda, the Tigers’ goal is to win Sectionals and move on to State Championships.
