Although girls’ lacrosse, 13-5-1, advanced in the postseason one round further than last year, the ending, unfortunately, remained the same.
The Tigers lost at Needham 16-4 in the Sectional Quarterfinals June 3 ending their season.
The loss was disappointing, according to junior Kayla Farina, a captain with junior Michela Salvucci, because the Tigers were trying to avenge last year’s postseason defeat, also to the Rockets.
“Last year, Needham kicked us out of the first round, and they’ve always been a strong team,” Farina said. “We played kind of scared, but we did well overall, and we had a great season, making it further than we have in past years.”
In the first round, the Tigers crushed Bridgewater-Raynham 18-4 at home May 31. The Tigers held the Trojans to one goal in the first half, scoring 14 themselves to build a huge lead.
The Tigers had also lost to Needham earlier this year, falling 17-9 on the road May 23.
The defeat marked the first time this season the Tigers had lost two consecutive games. Previously, the Tigers had suffered a 19-8 loss to Wellesley at home May 20.
Farina said that, despite the loss, the team came out motivated against Needham.
“We definitely wanted to play hard and win that one,” she said.
According to coach Kim Hamilton, “Everyone was committed and focused on achieving a common goal.”
Hamilton said that, for the tournament, the Tigers worked on “pressure situations.”
“We wanted the team to be willing to push themselves out of their comfort zones at practice, because there’s no easy team in the playoffs,” she said.
Farina said the Tigers’ success this season stemmed from their “very unselfish play.”
“We played great team lacrosse, so how we all played together was definitely one of our strengths,” Farina said.
