CrossFit gyms from across the region participated in a throw-down event hosted by CrossFit Newton Sunday, Jan. 22.

According to North parent and CrossFit Newton co-owner Jodie Cohen, six hand-picked teams comprised of gym members from CrossFit Maine, CrossFit Boston and CrossFit Newton participated in the event. Among CrossFit Newton’s team was physics teacher Shu-Yee Chen. Cohen said it was a “fun and friendly competition.”
Events included weightlifting, high pulls, pull ups and handstand push ups.
Cohen said that the goal of the event was to “get the local athletes ready for our competition season.”
CrossFit Newton is currently working towards qualifying for the Reebok Crossfit games in California, which will take place in July, said Cohen. She added that in order to qualify, the gym’s hand-selected team must make it to the New England regional competition, which is held in June at the Reebok headquarters in Canton.
“We have worked hard to increase our strength in all power lifts, and we continue to work on our metabolic conditioning,” said Cohen. “We are more powerful and stronger as a gym, and we have a very good chance of making the cut for Regionals this year.”
