Captain's mid-game goal secures field hockey win

by Jacob Schwartz

Field hockey, 3-1, took its third victory Thursday, defeating Milton 1-0 at home, in what was an exciting match until the final whistle.

Senior Bridget Gillis, a captain with junior Lizzie Reid, who scored the game’s only goal early in the second half, spoke after the win. “I was very happy that I scored, but I think I should have been able to score more by the end,” she said.

After receiving a pass on a penalty corner in the second half, Gillis took a hard wrist shot, which rolled by Milton’s goalie. Gillis is currently the team’s top scorer, according to Baugher.

“Bridget has just been phenomenal,” coach Lauren Baugher said. “She has a nose for the goal and can put it in the back of the net.”

It wasn’t just one nice shot by Gillis, however, that gave the Tigers the victory. Impressive defense and intuitive coaching decisions were also factors.

Baugher, who is in her first season as varsity field hockey coach, called a timeout with two minutes left in the game and the Tigers clinging to a one goal lead. During the timeout, Baugher subbed in an extra defender, shifting emphasis from increasing the lead to protecting it.

“I told them to manage the clock well,” Baugher said. The team succeeded, not allowing Milton near the goal.
