Boys’ soccer, 2-7-1, is working towards qualifying for the State Tournament, a feat not accomplished in the past few years. However, to qualify for the tournament, the Tigers would have to finish with a record of .500 or better.
“We realize that time is running out for that goal and we are treating all games as must wins,” said senior Alex Haslam, a captain with seniors Bruno Panedigrano and Eugene Oh.
Because of the need for more goals, the Tigers have switched to more of an attacking formation in order to score more goals, according to Haslam.
The Tigers have struggled to play defense on set plays as many of the goals given up have been on either free kicks or corner kicks according to Haslam. In an effort to fix this, they have been working on their marking during the set plays. He said, “It has definitely gotten better, but there is still room for improvement”.
Despite the seven losses, the Tigers have lost four games by just one goal and “with a few little tweaks we could have gotten at least a point (tie or win) during those games,” said Haslam.
Working with 11 new players, the year has been a learning process.
“A lot of them have stepped up in a huge way. We’ve played a lot of teams to the end, and I don’t think our record truly reflects our level of play,” said Oh.
Oh also believes that if the Tigers have to develop a strong level of trust to get to the next level.
Haslam said that they are looking forward to playing last years’ state champs Needham on Senior Night, the last game of the season.
