Girls’ gymnastics won the Bay State Conference Championship to advance to Sectionals in the SOA on Saturday, Feb. 9.

“I was really impressed with what we did because we have had a lot of injuries this season, but we still managed to do well,” said senior Lexie Chu, a captain with senior Morgan Britt-Webb.

North scored 140.56 points to narrowly defeat Wellesley by four points. In addition to winning the conference, Chu won Baystate Gymnast of the Year, and Jessica Morrison, the coach, won Baystate Coach of the Year.

According to Chu, “winning gymnast of the year was a huge honor and I was really proud to be able to represent my team and school like that.”

North performed well on vault, scoring a total of 36.4 points. The 36.4 was the highest score North had in the four events. The outstanding team performance was in part due to sophomore Nina Varady’s 9.3 score.

“We had a lot of really good scores. I don’t think we broke the school record, but we were definitely really close,” said Chu.

During the bars section, sophomore Liz Elvin completed a successful bars routine after being out for most of the season with a fractured ankle.

On floor, the music shut off during Chu’s routine. However, she continued on and scored a 9.1. The perseverance led to a team score of 34.5 on the event.

According to Chu, the team must “keep practicing really hard” in preparation for Sectionals.

The Tigers also hope that they can get back to full strength before the next meet.“We need some more people to get healthy,” Chu said.

North, 7-1, will travel to Algonquin on Saturday, Feb. 23 for Sectionals.
