In case you missed it, Monday’s game between the 49ers and the St. Louis Rams was a real showcase of Colin Kaepernick’s unparalleled skill set. Colin started the game poorly, and was getting visibly frustrated with himself, but when he got the ball back with roughly a minute and a half left in the second quarter, the game turned around for him and his football team. After a decent start to this end-of-half drive, Kaepernick’s veteran wide-out Brandon Lloyd cleanly beat CB Janoris Jenkins on a double move, gaining nearly five yards of separation. Lloyd was likely Kaepernick’s primary target on the play, and Colin threw a beautiful forty-some yard pass, leading Lloyd and allowing him to go for six. The score was now 14-10 Rams, but the Niners had all the momentum going into the locker room thanks to the Kaepernick-Lloyd hookup.
After San Francisco ran a few plays at the beginning of the second half, it was clear that Colin Kaepernick was not going to be stopped by the St. Louis defense. Early on, the 49ers found themselves deep in Ram territory when their drive looked like it would stall out for a field goal. However, when the Rams collapsed in on Colin on a huge third down, Kaepernick burst out of the pocket, using his terrific speed to run to his left side. Then, throwing across his body, he lofted a perfect ball up for WR Anquan Boldin, who easily caught the pass and gave San Francisco the 17-14 lead. Other than Tony Romo’s evasion of JJ Watt last week, this was the best play of the NFL season thus far.
Kaepernick would continue to play well in the game, throwing a TD pass to Michael Crabtree and doing a number on the Rams with some great designed runs. In fact, he almost ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter when he ran what basically turned into a naked bootleg to his left side. If it were the playoffs, I’m sure Colin would have dove for the pylon, but he smartly decided not to risk anything in a game that was basically over. The takeaway from this week’s edition of Monday Night Football is that Colin Kaepernick is the most exciting player to watch in pro football. His ability to make plays with his quick feet and strong arm is unique to the NFL and if you haven’t seen him play this year, I urge you to tune into Sunday Night Football this week to watch Colin and the boys take on Peyton Manning’s Broncos. Not only will this game be entertaining, but you won’t have to listen to Jon Gruden rambling on about XYZ Banana Go-Go or some other obscure play that is unknown to any of the MNF audience…
